International Talk Like Jar Jar Binks Day

While visiting the American Museum of Natural History in New York City yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised to hear a woman refer to her son as "Jar Jar" as I passed by them in the Milstein Hall of Ocean Life (Sadly no Gungans are on display there. YET).

"Come on Jar Jar" she said, I'm almost certain, beckoning her child to move along. 99% certain that's what she said. Not Zsa Zsa as SaturdayAMCereal suggested on Twitter when I mentioned that this had happened.

I didn't stop the woman to confirm what I heard, thinking that she might not appreciate a stranger asking her what her child's name is, but I feel pretty confident now that there's at least one child out there who is either named or at least nicknamed "Jar Jar" in obvious reference to Jar Jar Binks.

Therefore I'd like to invite everybody who has named their child Jar Jar to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. and let me know. Or if you've similarly run into someone who definitely has a child named Jar Jar like I did, let me know that as well. I'll start collecting data on this, and share results as I receive them.

I think this is great news. People feeling free to name their child Jar Jar means that they're finally beginning to feel comfortable displaying their love of our favorite Gungan. Is this a direct result of the popularity of International Talk Like Jar Jar Binks Day? I don't know if we can say for sure yet, but I know we can't not say for sure yet either.
