International Talk Like Jar Jar Binks Day

A few years back we learned that Jar Jar Binks was, at one point during production, set to make an appearance in Ralph Breaks the Internet. Now it appears as if he almost made it into another non Star Wars Disney movie as well: Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers.

Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers premiered on Disney+ in May of this year. This film sees Chip and Dale reuniting for the first time since their show ended in the mid-90s. It features a mix of live action, computer animation, and traditional animation, and is a spiritual successor to Who Framed Roger Rabbit.

During the film, Dale attends a fan convention where he runs into 'Ugly Sonic', the version of Sonic the Hedgehog that appeared in the original trailer for the 2020 Sonic the Hedgehog movie. This rendition of Sonic was famously scrapped and replaced by one who more closely resembles the Sonic from the video game series, after some fans had a hissy fit and complained a whole lot on the internet. Ugly Sonic is seemingly down on his luck and only has a few lines, but does appear again later during the film's climax.

It was recently revealed that the role that Ugly Sonic played was originally set to be filled by Jar Jar Binks. After the movie premiered on the streaming service, storyboard artist Simeon Wilkins posted some storyboards that he worked on for the film on his Instagram account: "One more sequence from Rescue Rangers- the Fan Expo chase. It’s great that the bones of this scene stayed fairly firm, while a bunch of characters were swapped out. Most notably, Jar Jar was replaced with Ugly Sonic."

According to Wilkins' Jar Jar wasn't replaced with Ugly Sonic until well after he finished work on the film. Although

Although it would have been nice to see Jar Jar again, Ugly Sonic is treated as a bit of a joke. We'd much prefer Jar Jar to be treated a little more respectfully in whatever movie or show he next appears in, Star Wars canon or otherwise.

Either way, Chip 'n' Dale: Rescue Rangers is a really fun movie, and you should check it out if you get a chance.
