International Talk Like Jar Jar Binks Day

Darth Jar Jar to appear in new LEGO Star Wars special

The trailer for LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy dropped this Monday, and it featured a sort of familiar face: Darth Jar Jar.

Rebuild the Galaxy is, according to starwars.com, a “4-piece” (like LEGO brick pieces) animated special about an “an ordinary nerf-herder, Sig Greebling” who “unearths a powerful artifact called the Cornerstone from a hidden Jedi temple” and “finds himself thrust into adventure in a new, wondrously wild and twisted version of the galaxy where good guys are bad, bad guys are good, and the fate of all depends on Sig becoming the hero who can put all the pieces back together.”

In the trailer we hear Bobby Moynihan’s character Jedi Bob saying that ‘The building blocks of the galaxy are getting mixed up’, presumably due to something that happens with the aforementioned Cornerstone. We then see/hear familiar Star Wars scenes being reconfigured and altered, and Sig is surprised that there are ‘X-Wing Tie Fighters’ and ‘Ewok bounty hunters.’

Finally, we get the big reveal. The Millennium Falcon lands and an evil looking Jar Jar disembarks before igniting his red lightsaber. He says, in a menacing voice: “Mesa going to hurt yousa!”

Sig Greebling then confirms that it is indeed the Sith Lord version of our favorite Gungan by exclaiming “Darth Jar Jar?!”

As a reminder, the Darth Jar Jar theory is one that gained popularity about a decade ago, which hypothesizes that George Lucas’ original plan was to reveal at some point in the prequel trilogy that Jar Jar was not the innocent Gungan that he appeared to be, but would turn out to be a Sith Lord conspiring with Darth Sidious to rule the galaxy. The theory posits that due to the negative reaction to Jar Jar, George Lucas panicked and abandoned this plot thread, minimizing Jar Jar’s role to almost nothing in the final two films.

There has never been any sort of official confirmation (that we’re aware of) from Lucasfilm or George Lucas himself that Jar Jar was going to be secretly evil. It is pretty obvious that Jar Jar’s presence in Episodes II and III was significantly less than it would have been if he had proven to be more popular at the time.

It goes without saying that Darth Jar Jar appearing in this special should alos not be considered any sort of confirmation that the Darth Jar Jar theory is true.

Nevertheless, it’s always good when we get more Jar Jar content and we’re excited to see what hijinks he gets up in this special.

Ahmed Best has been confirmed to be voicing (Darth) Jar Jar once again, and that’s always wecome news as well.

The show premieres on September 13th, on Disney +, just a few weeks after the 9th annual International Talk Like Jar Jar Binks Day.
